“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” — Bilbo, “The Lord of the Rings” — J.R.R. Tolkien
Traditionally, a gap year has been the period between college and the beginning of a career. These days, the definition is expanding. Maybe it’s 10 years… or 20 or 40 years into a career and we realize there’s an endless road yet to be discovered with “Somedayi” dreams and aspirations yet to be fulfilled.
Whether your “gap year” means taking a sabbatical, agrotourism, voluntourism or a great extended adventure, it’s an opportunity to rejuvenate, find a new passion, immerse yourself in a foreign culture and maybe, discover a new path.
